We are excited to present see-zeen #1.
In these polarized but fascinating times dialog is key, and photography, like all art, can be the catalyst to spark conversations. By giving a platform to a diverse global collective of artists who show different perspectives, see-zeen hopes to contribute to an open-minded community that accepts and respects the other.
In our deliberately curated first issue we share the projects which were selected from our first Open Call. We thank all the photographers from across the globe who submitted work.
The selected artists come from Japan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, USA, India, Russia, Colombia, the Netherlands and the UK.
Each of them was chosen for their thought-provoking work that is intentional and meaningful. Through their images, our nine featured photographers have the potential to initiate a dialog with each other and a broader audience. Their themes are relevant to today’s environment and reflect not only their world individually, but our world, all of us, wherever we live.
Sarah Mei Herman and Srikar Hari observe human connections, using different approaches. While Herman looks at the need for human interaction, Hari takes on the disconnection and reconnection in the family unit.
Juan Sebastian Echeverri, also using collage, expresses his criticism of the use of weapons in the US.
Dimitry Pechurin and William Major investigate the destruction of their environments on opposite sides of the world, in the US and Russia. In Nothing To Be Afraid Of, Pechurin examines the issue of radioactive waste around Moscow while Major records the impact of mountain top removals on the ecosystem in Hidden Appalachia.
Fatima Butt focuses on presence, and her images could be seen as a response to Raoof Dashti’s series where absence is the conversation point.
Makoto Oono and Damaris Athene consider the implications of morphing; Oono by merging foreign objects to create new relationships and Athene, a multidisciplinary artist, engaging in the digitization of the female body.
In addition to their images and project statements, you will find a questionnaire each artist completed.
